Abstract

Persons with disabilities are entitled to exercise their civil, political, social, economic and cultural rights on an equal basis with others. People may be disabled by physical, intellectual or sensory impairment, medical conditions or mental illness. Such impairments, conditions or illnesses may be permanent or transitory in nature. People with disabilities are vulnerable to social devaluation and negatives identities. To truly effect a change in this we need to enhance their capabilities since social value is usually accorded to people who are perceived to be competent and skilled. Special education is the individually planned and systematically monitored arrangement of physical settings, special equipment and materials, teaching procedures and other interventions designed to help exceptional children to achieve the greatest possible personal self sufficiency the academic success. Till recently it was felt that educational opportunities must be provided to all children who could benefit from them. By this they excluded children who are considered disabled from provided such opportunities. In this context, this paper makes an attempt to study the Awareness of the Secondary School Teachers about the various facilities available for the Disabled Children.
