ATTITUDE OF TRIBALS OF ATTAPPADY TOWARDS MENTAL RETARDATION IN TERMS OF THEIR AWARENESS LEVEL ON MENTAL RETARDATION By Ambady K.G.[1] and P.S. Sukumaran[2]

 

Abstract

The present study aimed to find the nature of attitude of tribals of Attappady towards mental retardation and attempted to analyze the attitude with respect to their awareness on mental retardation. Descriptive method of research was employed for the study. The study sample consists of 102 tribals who are residing in Attappady tribal development area, randomly selected from various tribal hamlets of Kurumba, Muduga and Irula tribes of Attappady. Data on attitude towards mental retardation and awareness on mental retardation of tribals were collected through a standardized tools developed by the authors. The data were analyzed through arithmetic mean, standard deviation, independent sample t-test, one way analysis of variance and least significant difference (LSD) test. The study shows that the awareness of tribals is a significant factor in determining their attitude towards mental retardation.
