AN INVESTIGATION ON INSTRUCTORS’ PERCEPTIONS AND PRACTICES OF COMMUNICATIVE LANGUAGE TEACHING IN EFL CLASSES:  THE CASE OF WOLLEGA UNIVERSITY By Ebissa Bekele Abate

Abstract

Communicative language teaching is one of the most recent and eclectic language teaching approaches extensively practiced in almost all countries that use English as second/foreign language. However, recent studies still reveal that there is a wider gap between theoretical assumptions and actual practices of the approach. Hence the researcher also observed the gap and realized that the level of communicative competence of Ethiopian higher institution students is still almost below standard. In relation to this, studies also have shown that there are many factors that obstruct the realization of the approach in language classes. Of these factors instructors’ perception and practices of the principles of the approach plays a significant role. Here the investigator made an attempt to study instructors’ perceptions and practices of the approach as teacher trainers at higher institution levels are supposed to train the prospective teachers of tomorrow in the most workable approach. Thus in this specific investigation the researcher investigated perceptions and practices of instructors with specific reference to Wollega University.
