CONSTRUCTION OF SEMANTIC SKILLS ASSESSMENT TEST (SSAT) FOR THE CHILDREN WITH MILD MENTAL RETARDATION By Dr. T. V. Sunish[1] and Dr. S. Rajaguru[2]

Abstract

Children with intellectual disability and language impairments demonstrate a broad range of semantic difficulties, including problems with new word acquisition, storage and organization of known words, and lexical access or retrieval. Unfortunately, assessments of children’s semantic skills are often limited to measures of receptive and expressive vocabulary size. Moreover there is limited standardized tool to assess semantic performance other than vocabulary size of children with intellectual disability. As a result, the semantic deficits of these children may not receive the attention they need. By focusing specifically on these problems, the investigator developed an assessment tool named ‘Semantic Skills Assessment Test’ (SSAT) for children with intellectual disability. The present tool developed in Malayalam language assesses the semantic skills of children with mild mental retardation. The tool contains 48 functional words which has use in daily life situations. The tool has sections for noun and verb words. The Pearsonian reliability coefficient based on test – retest for SSAT was found 0.97.
