PRACTICES AND CHALLENGES OF TECHNOLOGY ASSISTED LEARNING IN ETHIOPIAN HIGHER LEARNING INSTITUTION By  Sisay Awgichew Wondemtegegn

Abstract

Integration of technology into education has advanced significantly and changed the quality of education positively over the last two decades across the world. It is, therefore, important to understand how to best use technology for learning purposes. Identifying the challenges that influence the use of technology and understanding the perception of students about the role of technology-assisted learning in Higher Learning Institutions (HLIs) are amongst the concerns highlighted in this article. A questionnaire-based survey research design was constructed and employed. Totally, 292 students from four colleges of Haramaya University were selected via proportional and systematic random sampling techniques. The collected data were later on analysed using relevant descriptive statistics. The findings revealed that students in HLI had positive perception towards technology-assisted learning and they used technology to enhance their learning and access educational information from online and digital stores. However, there are many challenges affected the integration such as high cost of internet service and technological materials, poor support and low quality internet connection, lack of training and limited access to technology. Therefore, integrated initiatives need to be putting in place starting from the Ministry of Education down to curriculum designers, ICT professionals and Higher Education leaders. Keywords: ICT, Technology assisted learning, ICT integration.
