ASSERTION AND COOPERATION SOCIAL SKILLS AMONG ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH RESPECT TO THEIR LEVEL By  Pooja Sharma and Dr. Vishal Sood

Abstract

The present research study was undertaken to investigate assertion and cooperation social skills of elementary school students and how these are influenced by the level of overall cognitive abilities and home environment. Descriptive survey method was employed for the present investigation. Incidental sampling technique was used to select the sample of 2595 elementary school students from 120 schools from four districts of Himachal Pradesh. Home Environment Scale by Dr. Meenu Agarawal (2003), Translated version of Social Skills Rating System by Frank M.Gresham and Stephen N. Elliott (1990) and self developed Cognitive Abilities Test were used for data collection. The data were analyzed with the help of two way analysis of variance. The results of the study showed that elementary school students possessing high and moderate level of overall cognitive abilities significantly possessed more assertion and cooperation social skills as compared to the students with low level of overall cognitive abilities. Similarly, students belonging to good and moderate home environment have significantly shown higher cooperation social skill as compared to students belonging to poor home environment. The findings have been discussed and implications have been presented in the end of the paper. Keywords: Social skills, Home environment, Cognitive abilities.
